Mirvac is one of Australia’s most iconic property groups, with over 45 years of industry experience and over $18 billion of assets currently under management in Australia. To ensure that it is always on the cutting-edge, Mirvac developed an internal innovation program named Hatch, staffed by Innovation Champions.
Even with this internal innovation program in place, Mirvac wanted to take innovation to the next level. It approached Orange Squid with a desire to increase organisational capability, help their Innovation Champions manage specific projects and to better help develop innovation as an organisational capability.
To work towards the goal of increasing innovation capabilities, the team at Orange Squid worked closely, at many different levels, with not just the innovation staff, but also with other key members of staff at Mirvac. This involved working with the Mirvac innovation manager to develop strategies on multiple dimensions, working with some of Mirvac’s executives, and other managers, in addition to small teams of Innovation Champions. In the case of the Champions, ongoing advanced training and coaching was provided for both innovation veterans and new recruits.
Despite being such a large organisation, Orange Squid provided training and coaching for teams across Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. Training was purposefully designed to support the relevant project needs in each state, whether they be in the housing space, apartment space or commercial space.
Training, structures, processes and frameworks provided by Orange Squid were multifaceted, and carefully aligned with ensuring that Mirvac’s consistently increasing innovation capability was always helping it to deliver on organisational strategy. Workshops, individual sessions, project work and coaching all played important parts in helping Mirvac execute on its innovation strategy. This holistic approach delivered by Orange Squid ensured cultural change within the organisation – the concept of customer quickly became tightly entwined with Mirvac’s innovation strategy, ensuring that innovation was focused on the things which delivered value to the organisation in the most meaningful ways.
Because engagement occurred through all levels of the organisation, from the CEO to interns, Mirvac was able to successfully embrace and apply these new innovation strategies with ease. This success evolved into a long-term partnership between Mirvac and Orange Squid that continues to see the fruitful development of innovation in a constantly changing industry.
“Mark and Astrid have made a significant contribution to the success of Mirvac’s innovation program, Hatch. They have worked closely with the innovation team, champions and leaders since the program’s inception and over this time have provided valuable counsel and advice. As a team, their skills are highly complementary. Mark brings expertise in competitive strategy and the technical aspects of innovation. He is a highly engaging story-teller and trainer, and has been very successful in conveying the impetus for innovation and compelling audiences to action. Astrid brings valuable insight as an organisational psychologist. By understanding the complexity of effecting change within the culture of an established organisation, she has been able to provide advice through challenging situations as the foundation for the program was laid, and then gradually embedded. Orange Squid have a passion for innovation that is infectious. They have been involved in training and mentoring at every level of the business – from interns to the executive leadership. By making complex concepts digestible and simple for a broad audience, they are able to cut through and inspire employees in the business to make a direct impact that adds value. I have always found Orange Squid to be professional, reliable and to consistently produce high quality work. It is a pleasure working to perform”
